Round One: Krewe Du Vieux and Krewe Delusion

February 12 2014

Krewe du VieuxAlright! It’s finally here. The first weekend of carnival parades is finally here. It’s been over a year since the last Mardi Gras and I’m ready for some parade time.

Krewe Du Vieux

Krewe Du Vieux kicks off the party with its sarcastic humor and inappropriate style at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. This year the theme is "Where The Vile Things Are," so you can only imagine that fun that will ensure. This parade is a favorite of locals, and it's quite a contrast to the more traditional float centric Uptown parades that start the following weekend. Krewe Du Vieux marches through the Bywater, Marigny and French Quarter. Keep an eye out for handmade trinkets and stickers that you can’t show your mom. Warning: this is a fun parade, but this isn’t a family friendly parade.

Krewe DelusionKrewe Delusion

Following the Krewe Du Vieux is Krewe Delusion on a similar parade route stretching from Bywater to the French Quarter. This year, DJ Soul Sister will reign over the parade. This Krewe is made up of a number of upstart and established parading clubs, including dancing groups like the Beardered Oysters and the PussyFooters.

Suburban Parades

Outside of New Orleans, the Krewe of Bilge and Krewe of Mona Lisa and Moonpie parade through Slidell on Saturday. Krewe of Bilge is a boat parade and they set sail at high noon. The Krewe of Mona Lisa and Moonpie march through Old Towne Slidell that evening at 6 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 16 the parades kick off in Metairie with the Krewe of Little Rascals, a krewe made up entirely of children between the ages of two and 18. Also on Sunday, you can see the Krewe of Persus roll through the streets of Slidell. Keep an eye out for their hand decorated plastic crabs and crab beads.

Hope you’re ready for it! The parades are here and they just keep getting bigger and bigger each weekend.
