Mardi Gras isn’t just for humans in South Louisiana — it’s for dogs, too. From costumed canines strutting through historic downtowns to tail-wagging royalty leading the way, dog parades have become a beloved part of Carnival culture across the New Orleans area. In 2026, four standout events invite pups and their people to celebrate with themed costumes, festive routes, and plenty of photo-worthy moments. Whether you’re cheering from the sidelines or marching alongside your furry best friend, these parades prove that Mardi Gras really does go to the dogs.

Kick off your Carnival weekend with one of the most charming dog parades on the Northshore! The Krewe de Paws of Olde Towne strolls through the historic streets of Slidell in the morning. Participants parade with their pups in wagons, strollers, shopping carts — or simply on leash — showing off creative costumes and Mardi Gras spirit. This community-focused event not only brings joy to spectators but also raises awareness and funds for local animal assistance groups. Dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome, and it’s one of the few parades where your pet can officially join in on the Carnival fun!

Pro tip: Because it’s early and smaller-scale, this parade can be more relaxed and dog-friendly for pups who might be overwhelmed by larger Mardi Gras crowds.

This whimsical, dog-centric parade deeply rooted in the city’s Carnival culture. In 2026, Barkus celebrates under a cheeky theme: “Wicked & Wagged: Barkus Believes in Change for Good,” where costumed canines and their human escorts march through the French Quarter in a spirited procession that reportedly includes a pawty in Armstrong Park before and after the parade.

This parade isn’t just about cute costumes — it’s also a fundraiser for animal welfare organizations throughout the region and showcases the joyful bond between pets and their humans during Carnival season.

Pawdi Gras is a spirited pet parade that blends traditional Mardi Gras fun with family-friendly activities like costume contests, tailgates, vendor booths, and even a “royal court” for pups. Expect a lively start with check-in and tailgate festivities leading up to the parade down local streets, followed by a post-parade party. This event supports pet families and rescue advocacy, and it’s a great excuse to dress up your dog and enjoy a sunny Sunday outing.

Rounding out the day is the Krewe of Mardi PAWS, a beloved Northshore tradition of costumed pups, spirited walkers, and a parade route that winds through downtown Covington before ending with a post-parade celebration at the Covington Trailhead. Originally started in Old Mandeville before relocating to Covington, this dog parade also serves as a fundraiser — a portion of participation proceeds benefit local nonprofits like Scott’s Wish and other community organizations. Expect signature throws (including rubber, glitter, and themed keepsakes), friendly competitors vying for best costume, and an enthusiastic crowd cheering on every wagging tail. This year’s theme is “A Holiday Parade.”

Unleash the Excitement.

From Slidell’s early morning stroll to Covington’s afternoon paw-rade, each of these dog events brings out the best in Mardi Gras whimsy and pet-friendly fun. Whether your pup prefers a chill morning outing or the bustle of a downtown crowd, there’s a dog parade for every type of tail-wagger in the New Orleans area this Carnival season.
