2013 Mardi Gras Parades Kick Off This Weekend

Posted on: January 17 2013 | Posted in: Krewes

I hope you’re ready! The 2013 Mardi Gras parades start this weekend (January 19-20) and there’s something from everyone this kick-off weekend.

The parades start Saturday night in the heart of New Orleans with two krewes who promise to keep the adults entertained. Then Sunday afternoon is a much more family friendly parade in Metairie.

Krewe du Vieux

Krewe du VieuxKrewe du Vieux kicks of the parade season with their trek through the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny.

This wild krewe is known for their adult themes, political satire and light hearted comedy. If that’s not enough to get your attention, their parades also include some of the best brass and jazz bands in the Big Easy.

The theme of their 2013 is Krewe du Vieux comes early because the Krewe was forced to parade a week early because of the Super Bowl.

Krewe du Vieux marches Saturday, January 19th starting at 6:30 pm. Learn more about Krewe Du Vieux including more about them and their 2013 parade route.

krewedelusion

krewedelusion follows Krewe du Vieux Saturday night and keeps the party rolling into the evening.

krewedelusion is also a fun loving satirical parade, but they also require costumes and the ability to keep a secret. They keep the theme of their parade a closely guarded secret until the day of the parade.

krewedelusion is a collection of small parading clubs and groups like the Krewe du Jieux, a krewe determined to defeat Jewish stereotypes and the not to be missed dancing group called The Pussyfooters.

Learn more about krewedelusion, including their parade route and history.

Krewe of Little Rascals

Last but not least for this kick off weekend of Mardi Gras parades is the Krewe of Little Rascals in Metairie.

The Krewe of Little Rascals is America’s longest-running children’s Mardi Gras Krewe, parading annually since 1983. Members range from two years old to eighteen and include children of all races, religion and economic background. Each year they have about 14 to 20 floats a year including floats specially designed for handicapped riders.

They parade Sunday, January 20th at noon. Learn more about this Krewe including their history and parade route.
