Mardi Gras lovers hoping to watch the The Krewe of Thor and the Guardians of Atlantis parades this year are about to be sorely disappointed; the two krewes have both canceled their parades due to low membership numbers.

The official statement, released by administration spokeswoman Kriss Fortunato, said:

"Krewe of Thor leaders explain the group will take a year sabbatical to reorganize and hope to return for the 2015 Carnival... The Krewe of Thor has been a fixture in Jefferson Parish Carnival for 40 years, first parading in 1974.

"The newly formed Guardians of Atlantis has notified the parish it cannot meet the minimum membership requirements and therefore will not parade during the 2014 Carnival... Guardians of Atlantis was formed in 2012 and plans to reapply for the 2015 parade season."

Spokespeople from both krewes have said that they are hoping to organize parades for the 2015 Mardi Gras season, but for now they are focusing on short term goals for strengthening the krewes.
