Krewe of ChewbacchusSome breaking intergalactic planetary Mardi Gras news for you today from the sci-fi themed Krewe of Chewbacchus:

The BacchanALIENS, also known as the members of the Krewe of Chewbacchus, announced “The Wrath of Khan-ival” will be their 2014 theme. The theme is a head nod to the 1982 movie, Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. While the krewe is heavily Star Wars influenced, they’re hoping this year’s theme will unite sci-fi geeks, whether they’re Star Wars fans, Trekkies, gamers, cosplayers, ufo conspicracy theorists or mad scientisits.

Ryan Ballard, their Space Commander Chewbaccabra said that the parade will be a mobile version of the popular convention Comic Con. The krewe plans to parade with 800 members, a number of Star Trek themed contraptions (they don’t have floats, they have what they call contraptions, which krewe members build), including the Barship Enterprise, their featured contraption and ode to the Starship Enterprise.

Krewe of Chewbaccus is an open source parade, so anyone with a sci-fi costume is invited to join. It’s also a green parade. They don’t allow any contraption powered by internal combustion engines, or in plain English - no gas or diesel engines. They do allow anything that can be pedaled, pushed, pulled or powered by electric motors.

In addition to the contraptions and krewe members, they promise to bring along some of the best brass bands in the city. The band members won’t be required to wear costumes.

Chewbaccus have their own unique throws. There are no coconuts or shoes here. The members throw homemade trinkets, DIY beads, decorated moon pies and more.

Krewe of Chewbacchus parades Saturday, February 22 starting at 8 p.m. in the Marigny.

As more krewe updates come in, we’ll be sure to share them with you on this blog. If you’re more a social kind of person, we also have a Facebook page.
